What Is the Connection between Handwriting and Reading?

Handwriting and reading are closely connected, and there is significant research that demonstrates the link between the two. Developing strong handwriting skills can support the development of reading skills. By practicing writing by hand, children can improve their letter recognition, phonics and spelling skills, memory retention, and reading comprehension.

Letter Recognition

When children learn to write letters by hand, they are also learning to recognize them visually. By forming the shape of each letter with their hand, they are reinforcing the visual image of the letter in their mind.

Phonics and Spelling

Writing words by hand also helps children learn phonics and spelling rules. As they form the letters, they are also matching the phoneme to the graphemes.

Memory Retention

Writing by hand can also improve memory retention. When children write out words or phrases by hand, they are more likely to remember them later on. This can help them to read more fluently and accurately.

Reading Comprehension
There is evidence to suggest that when children write out text by hand, they are better able to comprehend what they are reading. This may be because writing by hand requires more attention and focus than typing or reading on a screen.
